Hi I have been using the free DOSBox for Android, and it’s great. But it doesn’t seem to come with a text editor. Could you recommend (a preferably free) one, just so I don’t have to rely on the PC to edit config / autoexec files. Thanks

I am not sure if you mean for android or a text editor for dos? FreeDOS (an open sourced DOS clone) has ‘edit’ which would work in dos box.

Comment on Run DOS on the Raspberry Pi – Use rpix86 to turn your Pi into a 1980s super-computer. by Doug Whiddon

Hello, great tutorial, but I have a couple of issues. first, you walk us through running rpix86 for the first time, but I had a bit of trouble getting it to run a second time. a couple of lines added could help.

A bit about how to add games you already have would also help (I just rebooted back to the GUI and dropped the game folders into the Dos directory)

Im pretty good with computers I got my first one 36 years ago, but, I’m brand new to the PI, and some of this took some work. A total noob would need more help.

Do you know if there is anyway to make the PI just boot straight into Rpix86/4dos without having to mess with commands? A batch file of some sort?

Hi Doug, thank you for the feedback as it is always appreciated. The guide is definitely not for noobs and I’ve updated the intro to reflect that. Like home computers of the 1980s, the Pi has limited resources. So I was forced to use the text terminal and disable the GUI to improve the performance of the DOS emulation.

What kind of trouble you were having in getting rpix86 to run a second time (I assume after a reboot)?

Did you know Raspbian is a slimmed down port of Debian Linux created specifically for the Raspberry Pi? So the guide was written for those with some skill in Linux but were maybe new to or unfamiliar with DOS, rather than the other way around. Linux is a very rewarding environment to learn once you get past its learning curve.

For file transfers I found the `wget http://example.com/somefile.zip` download command was the simplest way to get software onto rpix86. Because to be honest, there are so many possibilities for transferring files that I figured it was best to let the reader to work out their own solution.

Hello, I have been trying to use dos box to play my dune 2000 cd from 1998 (made for windows 95) on my computer. The win32 Error message comes up and I can’t play my game. Is there a way to fix this? Dune 2000 is a win16 game.

Hi, unfortunately DOSBox will be of no help. It is designed to run games made before Windows 95.

You may want to give OpenRA a try? I haven’t used it but it seems to allow you to run Dune 2000 on modern computers.

Hi Jordy,
If you’re installing from a CD you need to first make sure the destination directory is on the C:\ hard drive.
Otherwise maybe try creating the directory manually before running the install program.

mkdir c:\warcraft

getting this error Unknown algorithm tomcat

Although generated the Certificate with other available method on internet easily.

Initially it was not working for me after restarting the Tomcat7 service….. actually it needed a complete shutdown and startup again… as following

/opt/tomcat/bin$ ./shutdown.sh
/opt/tomcat/bin$ ./startup.sh

Thanks for sharing your experience. Unfortunately Tomcat can be a bit fickle depending on the configuration in use. My blog posts re:Tomcat are generally tested on clean installs and so may not work for each pre-existing setup.
